Why No Award Category For Best Make-up Artist?

The recently concluded Filmfare awards and the National Awards did not have the category for the Best Make-up artist. The last time that a make-up artist category found its way was in 2018 at the National Film Awards but the industry seems to be taking this category as an optional.

The movie Gulabo Sitabo won many awards at the Filmfare event that was conduced just a day ago. The main buzz that the film created prior to its release and after its release was Amitabh Bachchan’s make-up. The prosthetic nose or his facial make-up were hugely appreciated. But, there wasn’t much mentions of its Make-up and Prosthetics artist, Pia Cornelius.

Pia Cornelius has worked for films like Kurbaan, October, Gulabo Sitabo and the upcoming film Sardaar Uddham Singh. She was the main artist behind Amitabh Bachchan’s look in Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo. The film had other technicians and crew nominated for various categories but what’s astonishing is that there has been no category mentioned by the Awards organizers for Make-up department.

A film that won appreciation and craze for its make-up and prosthetics truly deserved an award for this category but in vain. Why is it that the Bollywood industry isn’t taking the Make-up segment as one of the crucial categories to award? A lot of hard work and talent amalgamates in making the artists look as per the characters and being a Make-up artist isn’t a cakewalk!

Internationally acclaimed Pia Cornelius and other Make-up and Prosthetics artists who worked for Bollywood films truly deserve a category that fetches them awards and recognition. Will the industry think over this missing link and rectify it? Or, will the Make-up artists still be left in the lure? Your guess is as good as mine!
