Blab With Sandy: Arjun Kanungo

Blab With Sandy: Arjun Kanungo

Hey Lovelies! Guess who is in the house on #BlabWithSandy this week? 🙂

It’s none other than the singing sensation Arjun Kanungo. His singles Baaki Baatein Peene Baad, Fursat, La La La and Aaya Na Tu, have all been super hits with the music lovers. Let’s dive into the blab:

Sandy: Hey Arjun! Hope the music is flowing through. 🙂

Arjun:  Hey Sandy! 🙂 Absolutely, planning the rest of 2019. 2018 has been the best year for me with two huge hits (Aaya na tu and LaLaLa). Hoping to make this year even bigger and for that you need to plan ahead.

Sandy: Could you let us know about your background?

Arjun: It’s complicated. I am a business college dropout who reapplied to finish his degree in journalism, did an acting course in one of the best method acting schools in the world (Lee Strasberg New York) and I also hold a sound engineering diploma.

I am also a sportsperson, I hold two gold and one silver medal at the national level in pistol shooting and have represented Maharashtra in Basketball.

Sandy: Even before talking music, let’s get to an interesting aspect of yours. I got to learn that you are a national winner in Centre-fire pistol and a basketball player. Could you throw some light on it?

Arjun: My mum is a 17-time national champion and commonwealth games medalist in pistol shooting so I have been around guns all my life. It was natural for me to enter the sport at a young age.

I started playing basketball when I was in college. I was already 6”4’ feet tall by the time I was in Junior college so, that’s how it all began!

Sandy: At a very young age, you started your own music recording studio Promethean Audio. How did it all begun for you with regards to your music career?

Arjun:  When I was 18 I decided I wanted to pursue music and I had no experience in the field.  A couple of years earlier I had started a small business with a friend and it made sense for me to start with the business side of music since it was what I knew.

The studio was a success. A lot of big musicians would come and rehearse and record there. I got to watch and learn a lot. It was also how I met Asha Bhosle ji.

Sandy: You debuted as a vocalist with Khoon Choos Le from Go Goa Gone. You made your mark as a singer internationally by touring with Asha Bhosle ji. Few anecdotes on your nascent journey.

Arjun: I auditioned for Asha ji’s band as a guitar player. While auditioning and strumming the guitar, I was singing little bit and Asha ji said, that I sing better than I play!

She asked me to tour with her live and I toured with her for a couple of years. I got to see the biggest stages in the world and it was such a huge learning experience.

Naturally through the exposure I met music directors. One of them was Sachin Jigar who gave an opportunity by singing for Go Goa Gone. And that’s how my solo singing career started.

Since then it has been a whirlwind of songs and my debut single ‘Baaki Baatein Peene Baad’ took me to the next level. My next single comes out in the beginning of January and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!

Sandy: Baaki Baatein Peene Baad, your hit single. I love it totally and it’s still a rage. It climbed the radio charts big time. How did it feel when listeners became your fans instantly with your first song itself? 🙂

Arjun: I still can’t believe it sometimes. My life has changed so much in the past 3 years.

Sandy: You followed it up with Fursat, La La La, Aaya Na Tu. Your musical bank seems to consist of only hit numbers Arjun, ha-ha!

What goes behind coming up with tunes that resonate with the audience? Do you do any research about the current taste of the listeners or you’d rather say it just comes from within you and music lovers are accepting it with the flow?

Arjun: There is a lot that goes behind the scenes. I don’t like making music for the heck of it.

I want to make good songs and while volume is important, quality is much much more important.

For every song that releases I make 10 more and don’t release them because I don’t think they are good enough. 🙂

Then there is the video aspect. I try to make the best videos possible without making it repetitive. It’s long process that sometimes takes upto 4 months.

I also had a very significant role in the Eros now show called ‘Sidehero’. Was great fun! Am doing more web stuff soon which is already on floors!
